Giovanni Strazza (1818-1875) was an Italian Lombard sculptor in the nineteenth century. He once studied under the Roman sculptor Peter Tennerani. From 1860-1875, he taught at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. He mainly belongs to academic neoclassicism, but his works also appear to be influenced by post-romanticism. His most famous work is "The Veiled Virgin"  And now, it is kept in St. John's Cathedral. It is one of the representative works of the Italian national "Renaissance Movement" (Risorgimento) period.  It is amazing to use marble to make such a thin and light veil. The production process is not novel, but it really takes time and energy: the artist needs to make a mud embryo of a girl's face and veil by hand, and then mold it. The plaster is made, and the details are carved on the plaster statue. Finally, the exact same statue is carved on the marble according to the size and proportion of the plaster statue. Because top marble has less texture, is easy to shape, and is easy to express sacred figures, it has long been very popular among sculptors. Michelangelo is a famous artist who uses marble carvings. In addition to him, there are beautiful works by the Italian court artist Bernini, which expresses the figures in mythology beautifully and vividly.
